Sikhna Jwhwlao National Park: The Sikhna Jwhwlao National Park has been officially declared as the 3rd National Park in BTR and the 8th in Assam. The announcement was made on 15th August 2024 by the Honourable Chief Minister of Assam, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, marking a significant milestone for the region and the state.

In the Assam Cabinet meeting held on 16th February 2025, the Assam government officially notified the Sikhna Jwhwlao NP in Chirang and Kokrajhar districts. This designation recognizes the park as a protected area in both districts of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR) of Assam, aiming to preserve its biodiversity, wildlife, and ecosystem.

Sikhna Jwhwlao National Park

Sikhna Jwhwlao NP is a newly declared national park in Assam’s Chirang and Kokrajhar districts of the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR). This park is spread over 316.29 sq.km is part of the Greater Manas Conservation Landscape and connects four other regional parks. The Assam government officially notified it during the Cabinet meeting held on 16th February 2025. This national park aims to protect and preserve the region’s rich biodiversity, wildlife, and ecosystems.

Sikhna Jwhwlao NP is the third national park in the BTR and the eighth in the state of Assam, contributing to the state’s growing network of protected areas.

The latest National Park of BTR is named after the Bodo legend Sikhna Jwhwlao, also popularly known as Jaolia Dewan, who fought against the British in the Anglo-Bhutan war in 1865. This naming honors his bravery and contribution to the history and culture of the Bodo community.

The Assam 8th National Park, and the 3rd in Bodoland, the Sikhna Jwhwlao National Park entry gate has been ianugurated on 5 June 2025, on the occasion of World Environment Day by the Urkhao Gwra Brahma.

The event was attended by several dignitaries, including BTR CEM Pramod Boro, Hon’ble MP Shri Joyanta Basumatary, MLA Shri Lawrence Islary, EM Shri Ranjit Basumatary, and others, who joined in celebrating this milestone for BTR and Assam.

How To Reach at Sikhna Jwhwlao NP?

Sikhna Jwhwlao National Park is easy to reach by road. You can get there via National Highway 27 or the Bismuri–Saralpara–Sarbhong Road. If you’re coming from nearby towns or cities, it’s best to use a personal vehicle, as public transport in the area may be limited. The nearest railway station is Kokrajhar Railway Station, and the closest airport is Rupsi Airport.

Kokrajhar town to Sikhna Jwhwlao National Park: To visit newly National Park Sikhna Jwhwlao from Kokrajhar town having your vehicle is highly recommended as the place is in a far-off land and cut off from outside communication. You need to travel around 40 km from Kokrajhar town via Bishmuri Saralpara Sarbhong road which takes about 2 hours and 12 minutes. 

Bongaigaon town to Sikhna Jwhwlao National Park: If you have started your journey from Bongaigaon town then you need to drive straight on the main National Highway 27. You need to travel around 46.2 km kilometers from Bongaigaon to reach the national park which takes about 1 hours and 10 minutes.
