What is B.Ed?

B.Ed stands for Bachelor of Education, is a professional undergraduate degree designed to prepare individuals for a career in teaching. It is a mandatory qualification for anyone who wishes to teach in primary, secondary, or higher secondary schools.

Duration of the Course
  • The B.Ed program is typically 2 years long.
  • It is divided into four semesters and includes both theoretical learning and practical training (like teaching practice in schools).

After completing the 2 year B.Ed program, candidates become eligible to work as teachers in the education sector. To secure a teaching position in government schools in Assam, candidates must clear the Teacher Eligibility Test (TET). Once qualified, they can apply for various govt school vacancies as they arise.

Similarly, for private school teaching positions, candidates may be required to undergo a selection process that typically includes a written test and a personal interview (viva). Notably, many private schools also prefer candidates who have qualified the TET.

NOTE: The B.Ed course was introduced under the Right to Education (RTE) Act, 2009, and officially implemented in April 2010. Since then, obtaining a B.Ed degree has been made mandatory for those aspiring to become teachers.
